The simple rule
Skincare absorbs from lightest to heaviest. Water-based products need to reach your skin before an occlusive layer goes on top, otherwise they sit on the surface and dry out.
Tallow is rich enough that it functions as the "seal" step. Apply it after anything water-based and before anything you want to stay on top of your skin.
A typical morning order
A streamlined AM sequence might look like this:
- Gentle cleanser (or just water, if you cleansed at night).
- Hydrating toner or essence, pressed in while skin is still damp.
- Water-based serum if you use one (vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid).
- A small amount of tallow, warmed between your fingers.
- Broad-spectrum SPF as the final step.
- Makeup, if any.
A typical evening order
At night, swap SPF out for whatever treatment you trust. If you use a retinoid or an exfoliating acid, apply it on clean dry skin and give it a moment to settle before sealing with tallow. The tallow layer makes those treatments feel less harsh without diluting them.
Common questions about layering
A few clarifications that come up often:
- Tallow does not "block" sunscreen — SPF on top of tallow performs the same as SPF on top of any moisturizer.
- You do not need to wait 20 minutes between layers. A few seconds of patting-in is plenty.
- If your skin pills under makeup, you applied too much tallow or applied it before water-based products had absorbed.
- On very oily days, consider tallow only at night and use a lighter routine in the morning.
