What changes, and why it isn't your imagination
Three quiet shifts drive most of what you notice in the mirror after 40.
First, oil production slows. The sebaceous glands that kept your skin comfortably coated through your twenties and thirties gradually make less sebum, the skin's own blend of fatty acids and lipids. Less natural oil means less of the soft, sealed feeling you used to get for free.
Second, the moisture barrier gets leakier. Your outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, works like a brick wall: skin cells are the bricks, and a mortar of lipids, ceramides, and cholesterol holds moisture in. With age, that mortar thins, and water escapes faster through a process called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. Faster water loss is why skin can drink up a moisturizer at 8 a.m. and feel tight again by 3 p.m.
Third, the deeper support structure changes. Collagen, the protein that gives skin its bounce, declines gradually with age, so skin can feel thinner and look less plump. Fine lines also look more visible on dry skin than on well-moisturized skin, which is why hydration alone can soften how lines appear. None of this is damage, and none of it needs to be fought. It is skin doing what skin does, and it responds well to being cared for on its own terms.
Perimenopause, menopause, and your moisture barrier
We'll name it directly, because vague talk about “a certain age” helps no one. Through perimenopause and menopause, hormonal shifts affect the skin barrier, and many women notice dryness, new sensitivity, or a thinner, more fragile feeling arriving faster than the slow drift of ordinary aging. If your skin seemed to change character in a couple of years rather than a couple of decades, this is usually why.
Two honest boundaries here. Skincare supports how your skin feels and looks; it does not treat hormonal symptoms, and any product that implies otherwise is overreaching. And these changes are a transition, not a decline. Why your old moisturizer stopped feeling like enough
Moisturizers work three ways. Humectants, like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, pull water into the skin. Emollients, like plant oils and tallow, soften and fill the gaps in the barrier's mortar. Occlusives sit on top and slow water from escaping. A light lotion built mostly on humectants worked fine when your barrier was tight, because the water it attracted stayed put.
When the barrier loosens with age, that same lotion pulls water in and then lets it evaporate right back out. The moisturizer didn't stop working; the job changed. Drier, mature skin usually wants more of the emollient and occlusive side: richer textures whose fatty acids sit close to the ones your barrier is losing. Thinner-feeling skin wants gentler handling
Mature skin is more delicate than it used to be, so how you touch it matters as much as what you put on it. Cleanse without stripping: a sulfate-free cleanser that leaves skin soft rather than squeaky protects the lipids your barrier is already short on. Press products in rather than rubbing them across the surface. Extend whatever you use for your face down your neck and onto the backs of your hands, two places that show dryness earliest.

A simple routine that respects all of this
Nothing above requires ten steps. A complete routine for skin after 40 fits in four:
- Cleanse gently, morning and night, and leave skin slightly damp.
- Hydrate if needed: a mist or a light humectant layer on damp skin gives your moisturizer water to seal in.
- Nourish with a rich emollient: press a tallow cream or comparable barrier-supporting moisturizer into damp skin, with a more generous portion at night.
- SPF every morning. Daily sun protection remains the single best-documented thing you can do for how skin ages, and it costs one step.

What you can skip
Skip the guilt first. The beauty industry sold a generation of women a ten-step routine and then blamed their skin when it rebelled. More products means more chances for irritation on a barrier that is already more permeable, and daily acid exfoliation is one of the fastest ways to make mature skin feel worse.
