Two principles before any products
Damp skin is the multiplier. Every moisturizing step works better on slightly damp skin, because the water sitting on the surface gets sealed in rather than lost. This is the closest thing skincare has to a free upgrade.
Consistency beats intensity.Mature skin's barrier recovers more slowly than it did at 30, so it rewards the same gentle routine done daily over any ambitious routine done sporadically. If you want the full reasoning, start with how skin changes after 40.
Morning: four steps, about three minutes
- Cleanse gently, or just rinse. If your skin is dry, a warm-water rinse is often enough in the morning. If you prefer a cleanser, choose a sulfate-free one that leaves skin soft rather than squeaky.
- Hydrate while damp. A hydrating mist or a few drops of a humectant on damp skin gives the next step water to lock in. A prep step is optional, but it makes the moisturizer noticeably more comfortable.
- Moisturize with your lighter cream. Daytime wants something that absorbs cleanly and sits well under SPF and makeup. Save the richest layer for tonight.
- SPF, every single morning. Daily sun protection is the best-documented step in all of skincare for how skin ages. Cloudy days and car windows count. If you layer it over other products, our FAQ on layering with serums and SPF covers the order.
Night: three steps, about five minutes
- Cleanse the day away.Evening is the cleanse that matters: SPF, makeup, and the day's grime come off, gently, and skin stays slightly damp afterward.
- Mist or leave damp. Same principle as the morning. Damp skin turns your night cream into a better version of itself.
- Press in your richest layer. Warm a pea-sized amount of a rich emollient, like a grass-fed tallow cream, between your fingertips and press it into face, neck, and anywhere that feels dry. Pressing suits delicate, mature skin better than rubbing. Overnight, an emollient this rich gets hours of undisturbed time to cushion the barrier.
Whether you use your rich layer morning or night, or both, is preference, not law. Our morning or night FAQ walks through the trade-offs.
What about everything else?
Serums, masks, and actives are optional extras on top of this foundation, not requirements. Two honest cautions for mature skin: keep exfoliation occasional rather than daily, and introduce one new product at a time with a patch test, since skin after 40 is often more reactive than it used to be. If a step ever stings or leaves skin tight, that step is subtracting, not adding.
The pattern to protect is the foundation itself: gentle cleanse, damp skin, the right moisturizer for the time of day, SPF in the morning. Everything in our range maps onto those steps, which is exactly the point of a simple skincare routine.
